Bruce grew up, an only child, in the Sugar Hill area of New York City in the 1940s. When he was in elementary school, his mom brought home a Cocker Spaniel. It was Bruce’s job to walk the dog. Sometimes he would meet up with his friend Rosemary, who lived nearby and also had a Cocker Spaniel.
According to her, “People in the neighborhood thought we looked alike; they thought we were brother and sister, especially because we both walked Cocker Spaniels.”
Thirty years later, Bruce had moved to Los Angeles where he lived with his wife, Janet. Unable to have children, they poured their love into a family of rescued, orphaned and/or abused dogs.
Bruce and Janet were longtime supporters of Best Friends Animal Society.
Many musicians write songs about the object of their love. With Bruce, that heart connection is revealed in his spiritual “Old Dog” and the humorous “Chihuahua.”
